73. A Midnight Message - God Saves the Day (Again!)

Do you ever feel like evil is winning? That's how it might have felt in Samuel's day. Evil people were in charge of Israel, and they even stopped the people from worshipping God properly! All the time, though, God was getting ready to replace them with a much better leader. Join Dave as he explores 1 Samuel 2 and 3, and discover how God works in surprising ways to make his good plans work.

Speaker AGet in contact@faithfulgod.net now, on with the show.
Speaker ADo you know that God's plans are always good?
Speaker AHe's always working to do what's best.
Speaker AWhat he does is always excellent.
Speaker AAnd yet sometimes it's hard to see what he's doing.
Speaker ASometimes you look around and it seems like everything's gone wrong.
Speaker AYou expect God to have done something and he hasn't done it.
Speaker AIn today's story, we see just how bad things have become in ancient Israel.
Speaker AIn the place where you expect to see the most goodness and godliness and love, you just see evil in the people.
Speaker AYou expect to be the best at trusting God and helping other people trust Him.
Speaker AWe just see wickedness and sin.
Speaker ABut in the place where you least expect to find it in a person you never expected to look at, we see that God is about to do a wonderful work to save his people.
Speaker AGet ready for our next episode of Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker AAt the end of our last episode, Hannah had left her young son Samuel at the tabernacle.
Speaker ARemember, the tabernacle is the tent where people go to make sacrifices to God.
Speaker AIt was a bit like God's home on earth.
Speaker AIt reminded his people, the Israelites, that he lived with them.
Speaker AThe man in charge of the tabernacle is the high priest called Eli.
Speaker AHe is helped by his two sons, the priests Hophni and Phinehas.
Speaker AThe job of the priests is to be a sort of go between between God and the Israelites.
Speaker AThey would help the Israelites make sacrifices for their sins so God could keep living with them.
Speaker AThat is a massively important job.
Speaker AIf the people keep sinning but can't be forgiven by God, they are in deep trouble.
Speaker AIn chapter 2, verse 12 of 1 Samuel, we find out that the Israelites are in deep trouble.
Speaker AWe're told now Eli's sons were evil men.
Speaker AThey did not care about the Lord.
Speaker AOh no that's really bad for them, but it's also really bad for the Israelites, especially when you hear about what the priests are doing.
Speaker AGod had made a rule that when the Israelites sacrifice an animal to God, they should burn the fat on God's altar and then they should give some of the meat to the priests.
Speaker AIt's a way of making sure the priests are fed as they do God's work.
Speaker AEven though Hophni and Phinehas get this special privilege, though, even though they get given this free food, they want more.
Speaker AThey don't just want the bits that they're meant to get, they want the bits that God's meant to get.
Speaker ASo when the Israelites come to Shiloh to offer sacrifices to God, the priests would just take whatever they want.
Speaker AAnd if the Israelites complained, well, things got pretty nasty.
Speaker AIn verse 15, we're told even before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come to the person offering sacrifices.
Speaker AThe servant would say, give the priest some meat to roast.
Speaker AThe priest won't accept boiled meat from you.
Speaker AHe'll only accept raw meat.
Speaker ABut the man who offered the sacrifice might say, let the fat be burned up first, as usual.
Speaker AThen you may take anything you want.
Speaker AIf so, the priest's servant would answer, no, give me the meat now.
Speaker AIf you don't, I'll take it by force.
Speaker AThis is awful.
Speaker AAnd God is watching.
Speaker AThe priests of God are being so disrespectful to God, and they're making it really hard for the Israelites to serve their God.
Speaker AI wonder what God will do.
Speaker AMeanwhile, at the tabernacle, there's someone who's not a priest, but who's dressed like a priest.
Speaker ASomeone unexpected.
Speaker AThis is the boy Samuel.
Speaker AAnd unlike Hophni and Phinehas, Samuel obeys the Lord.
Speaker AEvery year, his mum and dad would come to Shiloh to sacrifice to God.
Speaker AAnd his mum, Hannah, would bring a new coat for him.
Speaker AVerse 20 tells us this.
Speaker AEli would bless Elkanah and his wife.
Speaker AEli would say, may the Lord repay you with children.
Speaker AThrough Hannah, they will take the place of the boy Hannah prayed for and gave back to the Lord.
Speaker AThen Elkanah and Hannah would go home.
Speaker AAnd you know what?
Speaker AGod does?
Speaker AGive Hannah more children.
Speaker AEven though when we first met Hannah, she couldn't have any.
Speaker AWe now God gives her three more sons and two daughters.
Speaker AHe's looked after her and cared for her in wonderful ways.
Speaker AAnd her first son, Samuel, grows up serving the Lord at the tabernacle, which is really weird because all priests are Meant to be from the tribe of Levi.
Speaker ASamuel isn't from the tribe of Levi.
Speaker AHe's from the tribe of Ephraim.
Speaker AHow strange that he's so keen to follow God when the priests Hophni and Phinehas couldn't care less about God.
Speaker AWell, Eli, the high priest, is very old and he hears about all the dodgy things his sons are doing.
Speaker AAs well as stealing the meat from people's sacrifices, they're also treating the women who work at the tabernacle really badly.
Speaker ASo Eli decides to warn his sons.
Speaker AIn verse 23, he says this.
Speaker AThe people here tell me about the evil you do.
Speaker AWhy do you do these evil things?
Speaker ANo, my sons, the Lord's people are saying bad things about you.
Speaker AIf someone sins against another person, God can help him.
Speaker ABut if he sins against the Lord himself, no one can help him.
Speaker ABut Hophni and Phinehas don't listen to the warning because God's decided to put them to death.
Speaker AAnd a part of their punishment is that they won't ask for forgiveness, so God won't save them from death.
Speaker ASamuel, though, keeps growing and keeps pleasing God and people.
Speaker AOne day, a man of God comes to Eli, a prophet who has a message from God for Eli.
Speaker AHe reminds Eli of the great honour and privilege he has to be a priest.
Speaker AHe also says that Eli's done very little to stop his sons from doing all that evil.
Speaker AIn fact, he's actually been joining them by eating some of the stolen food.
Speaker AThe man says in verse 27.
Speaker AThis is what the Lord says.
Speaker AI clearly showed myself to the family of your ancestor Aaron.
Speaker AThis was when they were slaves to the king of Egypt.
Speaker AI chose them from all the tribes of Israel to be my priests.
Speaker AI wanted them to go up to my altar to burn incense and to wear the holy vest.
Speaker AI also let the family of your ancestor have part of all the offerings sacrificed by the Israelites.
Speaker ASo why don't you respect the sacrifices and gifts?
Speaker AYou honour your sons more than me.
Speaker AYou become fat on the best parts of the meat the Israelites bring to me.
Speaker AHere's what the Lord, the God of Israel says.
Speaker AI promised that your family and your ancestors family would serve me forever.
Speaker ABut now the Lord says this, that will never be.
Speaker AI will honour those who honour me, but I will take honour away from those who do not honour me.
Speaker AThe time is coming when I will destroy the descendants of both you and your ancestors.
Speaker ANo man will grow old in your family.
Speaker AYou will see trouble in my house.
Speaker AGood things will be done to Israel but there will never be an old man in your family.
Speaker AI will save one man to serve as priest at my altar.
Speaker AHe will wear out his eyes and use up his strength.
Speaker AThe rest of your descendants will die by the sword.
Speaker AI will give you a sign.
Speaker ABoth your sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will die on the same day.
Speaker AWoah.
Speaker AGod is seriously angry.
Speaker AHe hates how Eli and his sons have treated him.
Speaker AAnd there's no more escape for them.
Speaker AThey should never have messed with God.
Speaker ABut even though God's going to get rid of these guys, it doesn't mean he's going to leave his people without a priest.
Speaker AIn fact, God's going to raise up a loyal priest, a faithful priest, A priest who will do what God wants.
Speaker AGod says in verse 35, I will choose a loyal priest for myself.
Speaker AHe will listen to me and do what I want.
Speaker AI will make his family strong.
Speaker AHe will always serve before my appointed king.
Speaker AUmm, hang on a second.
Speaker AWho's this king God's talking about?
Speaker AIsrael doesn't even have a king at this stage.
Speaker AAnd who's the priest going to be?
Speaker AThis priest who'll actually listen to God?
Speaker ACould it be that the new priest is hiding in plain sight?
Speaker ASamuel is serving the Lord under Eli.
Speaker AEli is getting really old and he's starting to become blind.
Speaker AOne night, Eli is lying down to sleep.
Speaker ASamuel's also lying down.
Speaker AHe's in the Tabernacle, the Lord's special tent where the Ark of the Covenant is kept.
Speaker ASuddenly, God calls out to Samuel.
Speaker AYou might think this sort of thing happens all the time in the Old Testament, but it doesn't.
Speaker ASamuel thinks he knows who's calling, but he gets it completely wrong.
Speaker AHe jumps up out of bed and says, I am here.
Speaker AAnd he runs off to Eli and says, I am here.
Speaker AYou called me.
Speaker AHave you ever woken up your parents in the middle of the night?
Speaker AHave you ever done it for absolutely no reason at all?
Speaker AThis is a bit like that.
Speaker AEli's sound asleep, and when Samuel comes barging in, he's like, I didn't call you.
Speaker AGo back to bed.
Speaker ASo Samuel goes back to bed.
Speaker AHow strange.
Speaker AThen God calls a second time, Samuel.
Speaker AAnd again Samuel jumps up out of bed and runs to Eli.
Speaker AHe's a very faithful servant and he always leaps into action.
Speaker AHe says to Eli, I am here.
Speaker AYou called me.
Speaker ACan you imagine how Eli's feeling now?
Speaker AHe says in verse six, oh, I didn't call you.
Speaker AGo back to bed now.
Speaker ASamuel's never had God call him like this before.
Speaker AHe's got no idea what's going on.
Speaker ASo a third time, God calls out to Samuel.
Speaker AAnd a third time, Samuel leaps out of bed, runs to Eli and says, I am here.
Speaker AYou called me.
Speaker AFinally, Eli wakes up and realises what's going on.
Speaker AHe realizes that the Lord is calling Samuel.
Speaker AHe tells Samuel, go to bed.
Speaker AIf he calls you again, say, speak, Lord, I am your servant and I am listening.
Speaker ASo Samuel goes back and lies down again.
Speaker AAnd a fourth time, God calls out, samuel, Samuel.
Speaker AFinally Samuel replies, speak, Lord, I am your servant and I am listening.
Speaker APhew.
Speaker AThe message God has for Samuel isn't a happy one.
Speaker AHe tells Samuel that everything he said about punishing Eli and his family, it's about to happen.
Speaker AIn verse 11, the Lord says, see, I am going to do something in Israel.
Speaker AIt will shock those who hear about it.
Speaker AAt that time, I will do to Eli and his family everything I promised.
Speaker AI will not stop until I have finished.
Speaker AI told Eli I would punish his family forever.
Speaker AI will do it.
Speaker ABecause Eli knew his sons were evil.
Speaker AThey spoke against me, but he did not control them.
Speaker ASo here is what I promised Eli's family.
Speaker AYour guilt will never be removed by sacrifice or offering.
Speaker AImagine hearing you could never be forgiven.
Speaker AThe next morning, Eli wants to ask Samuel what God said.
Speaker AAnd Samuel's like so.
Speaker AIn verse 17, Eli says, what did the Lord say to you?
Speaker ADon't hide it from me.
Speaker AMay God punish you terribly if you hide from me anything he said to you.
Speaker ASo Samuel tells him everything.
Speaker AAnd what do you think?
Speaker ADo you think Eli bursts into tears?
Speaker ADo you think he tears his clothes in sadness?
Speaker ADo you think he falls on his knees and prays to God, begging for mercy?
Speaker AThat's what he should do.
Speaker ABut instead he just says, he is the Lord.
Speaker ALet him do what he thinks is best.
Speaker AUmm, Eli, did you actually hear what's going to happen?
Speaker AIs that your only response?
Speaker AEli's response tells us a lot about Eli.
Speaker AEven though he sounds like he's on God's side, saying God should do what he thinks is best, he actually doesn't really care about God.
Speaker AHe isn't worried about God punishing him.
Speaker AIt's kind of like he doesn't even really believe God.
Speaker AEli really is a useless priest.
Speaker ABut God has plans to give Israel someone much better.
Speaker ASomeone who will really believe God, someone who will really help his people.
Speaker AAnd that person is Samuel.
Speaker AIn verse 19, we're told this.
Speaker AThe Lord was with Samuel as he grew up.
Speaker AHe did not let any of Samuel's messages fail to come true.
Speaker AThen All Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, knew Samuel was a prophet of the Lord.
Speaker AAnd the Lord continued to show himself to Samuel at Shiloh.
Speaker AHe also showed Himself to Samuel through His Word.
Speaker AEven though things looked really bad, even though really evil people were meant to be serving God, even though Israel had these really horrible leaders, God had already been growing Samuel to do a much better job.
Speaker AIt reminds me of another time around the first Easter.
Speaker AThe high priest then Caiaphas, was really evil.
Speaker AHe couldn't even recognise that God the Son had come into the world.
Speaker AJesus Christ.
Speaker AIn fact, he wanted to kill God the Son.
Speaker AAnd yet God had already prepared a much better high priest.
Speaker AA perfect high priest who always listens to God the Father.
Speaker AJesus is that great high priest.
Speaker AHe's the one who helps us by making the perfect sacrifice for our sins.
Speaker AHe offered himself as a sacrifice for our sins so we could be forgiven and join God's family.
Speaker AIf you ever feel like everything's gone wrong and bad people are always winning, remember God is always working to do what's best.
Speaker ARemember, God sent us Jesus, our great high priest, the perfect priest, to bring us to God.
Speaker AMeanwhile, back in Israel, the drums of war are beating, armies are marching out to battle.
Speaker AThe Philistines are about to attack.
Speaker ABut that's a story for next time.
Speaker AFriends, I hope you're finding this series really helpful and the podcast as a whole.
Speaker AI hope that it's really helping you to know God better.
Speaker AIt takes a bit of time and energy to put these things together and time costs money.
Speaker AI wonder if you'd consider being a financial donor.
Speaker AAt the moment, I'm getting about 30% of what I need to keep going and people have been very kind who have given.
Speaker ABut I wonder if you would consider that as well.
Speaker AIf you can't, don't worry.
Speaker AThey're all there ready for you to listen to keep trusting Jesus.
Speaker ABye for now.
