95. A Tale of Two Families: Genesis 4-5
In life, there are two directions you can go. One leads to life in God, the other leads to evil and pain. In today's story, we see two families that go in very different directions, with very different results. Which direction will you choose? G' day and welcome to Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker ADave here.
Speaker ADo you know there are lots of things you can try to do in two different ways?
Speaker AFor example, you can jump out of a plane in two different ways.
Speaker AYou can jump with a parachute or without a parachute.
Speaker AOne of those ways is very wise and possibly very fun.
Speaker AThe other way is very, very silly.
Speaker AYou can look at a shark's teeth in two ways.
Speaker AYou can go to a museum and look at the teeth of a shark that died 100 years ago.
Speaker AOr you can find a live shark and stick your head inside its mouth while telling it to stay very still.
Speaker AOne of those ways is interesting and informative.
Speaker AThe other way is very, very silly.
Speaker AYou can do a Saturday morning in two ways.
Speaker AOne way is to wake up very early, quietly clean the kitchen, tidy a room, and make a yummy breakfast for the grown ups in the house, keeping it warm until they wake up.
Speaker AThe other way is to wake up very early, charge into your grown up's room, jump up and down on their bed, and ask them what fun thing you're going to do today.
Speaker AOne of those ways is kind and loving.
Speaker AAnd the other way might mean I get lots of angry emails from the grown ups.
Speaker AThere are also two ways to live your life.
Speaker AYou can live your life trusting and following God, or you can try to live your life without God in charge.
Speaker AIn today's story, two families choose two very different ways and it leads to two very different results.
Speaker AGet ready for our next episode of Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker AThe very first humans, Adam and Eve had two ways they could go.
Speaker AThey could trust God and have life forever, or they could ignore God and die.
Speaker AThey chose the wrong way.
Speaker ATheir very first son had two ways he could go.
Speaker AHe could trust God and work to do what's right, or he could ignore God and kill his brother.
Speaker AHe chose the wrong way.
Speaker AAt the end of our last episode, he had to go wandering for the rest of his life, cursed by God because of his evil.
Speaker ANow he's going to have a family of his own.
Speaker AWhich way will they go?
Speaker AWill they trust God or will they ignore him?
Speaker AGenesis 4:17 says this.
Speaker ACain had intimate relations with his wife.
Speaker AShe became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch.
Speaker AAt that time, Cain was building a city.
Speaker AHe named it after his son, Enoch.
Speaker AHmm.
Speaker AWhy is Cain building a city?
Speaker AHe's meant to be wandering the earth.
Speaker AA city is where people stop wandering and settle down.
Speaker AIs he ignoring God again?
Speaker AWell, as time goes on, his son has a son who has a Son.
Speaker AI suspect a lot of their names may sound a bit strange to us.
Speaker AI wonder if you can spell them.
Speaker ARemember, Cain's first son is Enoch.
Speaker AAnd let me read what happens after Enoch from verse 18.
Speaker AEnoch had a son named Irad.
Speaker AIrad had a son named Mehujael.
Speaker AMehujael had a son named Methushael.
Speaker AAnd Methushael had a son named Lamech.
Speaker AHmm, I don't know any Methushael's around today.
Speaker ABut what's happening in this family?
Speaker AWhich way are they living?
Speaker AGod's way or the wrong way?
Speaker AWe're not given much detail until we get to the last name on the list.
Speaker ALamech.
Speaker AHe's the seventh generation from Adam.
Speaker AGenerations are like.
Speaker AGrandparents are one generation, parents are the next generation, kids are the next generation.
Speaker ALamech is in the seventh generation.
Speaker ANow we get to hear about some of the choices he makes.
Speaker AThe first choice we hear about is not good.
Speaker ALamech takes two wives for himself at the same time.
Speaker AThis is a disaster.
Speaker AGod made marriage to happen between one man and one woman at a time.
Speaker AThat's the best way for them to be husband and wife.
Speaker ABut Lamech doesn't really care about his wife, he's just greedy for more.
Speaker ASo he takes two wives.
Speaker ATheir names are Ada and Zillah.
Speaker ASoon both women give birth to children.
Speaker AAnd those children do some pretty amazing things.
Speaker AWe're told in verse 20, Adah gave birth to Jabal.
Speaker AHe was the first person to live in tents and raise cattle.
Speaker ANot many people live in tents when they're raising cattle anymore, but it used to happen a lot.
Speaker AAnd if you've seen lots of people do it, you'd probably have a pretty good idea how to do it.
Speaker ABut this guy Jabal was the first ever man to work it out.
Speaker AThat's pretty impressive.
Speaker AHis brother Jubal is also pretty impressive.
Speaker AHe's the first ever person to play the harp and the flute.
Speaker AThe harp is a stringed instrument before they ever had guitars.
Speaker AThis guy actually invented those first instruments.
Speaker AWell, Zilla also has a son.
Speaker AHe's called Tubal Cain.
Speaker AAnd he works out how to make tools out of bronze and iron.
Speaker AJust think next time you pick up a metal fork or a screwdriver or a nail.
Speaker AThere were times when none of them existed.
Speaker AAnd this guy Tubal Cain worked out how to make metal tools for the first time time.
Speaker ATubal Cain also has a sister called Naama.
Speaker ANow it seems like this family is doing lots of good stuff.
Speaker AUnfortunately, just because you can invent cool stuff, it doesn't mean you're living the right way.
Speaker ALots of people think our society is really good because we have things like cars and mobile phones and computers and chocolate bars.
Speaker ABut you can have all that and still be evil, still be living the wrong way.
Speaker AAnd that's exactly what Lamech, the father of all these creative guys, is doing.
Speaker AHe thinks he has the right to kill whoever he wants.
Speaker AHe thinks he doesn't need God to look after him.
Speaker AHe thinks he can do better than God.
Speaker AOne day he comes home and yells out to his wives these words in verse 23.
Speaker AAda and Zilla, hear my voice, you wives of Lamech.
Speaker AListen to what I say.
Speaker AI killed a man for wounding me.
Speaker AI killed a young man for hitting me.
Speaker ACain's killer may be punished seven times.
Speaker AThen Lamech's killer will be punished 77 times.
Speaker AOh, no.
Speaker ADo you remember that God said, if anyone hurts Cain, God will punish him seven times over?
Speaker AWell, now Lamech thinks he can do heaps better than that.
Speaker ABetter than God.
Speaker AHe can punish someone 77 times.
Speaker AHe's such a nasty, evil man, just like Cain.
Speaker AHe reckons he can kill someone just because they made him angry.
Speaker AIt seems like this family has gone completely the wrong way.
Speaker AWay.
Speaker ABut then we're told about another family.
Speaker AI mean, they all come from Adam and Eve, but this new family comes from a new son of Adam and eve.
Speaker AIn verse 25, we're told Adam had intimate relations with his wife Eve again, and she gave birth to a son.
Speaker AShe named him Seth.
Speaker AEve said, God has given me another child.
Speaker AHe will take the place of Abel, who was killed by Cain.
Speaker ASeth also had a son.
Speaker AThey named him Enosh.
Speaker AAt that time, people began to pray to the Lord.
Speaker AHow wonderful for God to give them a new son.
Speaker AAnd as this new son's family grows, something wonderful happens.
Speaker AThe people begin to pray to the Lord.
Speaker ASuddenly people are saying, we need God.
Speaker AWe can't live without God.
Speaker AWe can't be like Cain and Lamech.
Speaker AThis family has chosen a different, better way.
Speaker AAnd so now we're told about the first seven generations of this family.
Speaker AThe family that's gone a different way.
Speaker AThey all get to live very long lives.
Speaker ANo one today lives as long as these guys did.
Speaker ABut eventually they die.
Speaker AEven though they've chosen a better way, they still sin and they still die.
Speaker AAs I read it out to you, though, I want you to listen really carefully, because when we reach the seventh generation, the same generation as evil Lamech, something amazing happens.
Speaker ASee if you can pick it up.
Speaker AAnd as we go join in with the words.
Speaker AIf you hear the pattern.
Speaker AHere we go from chapter five, verse one.
Speaker AThis is the family history of Adam.
Speaker AWhen God created human beings, he made them in God's likeness.
Speaker AHe created them male and female, and on that day, he blessed them and named them human beings.
Speaker AWhen Adam was 130 years old, he became the father of another son.
Speaker AHe was in the likeness and image of Adam.
Speaker AAdam named him Seth.
Speaker AAfter Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years.
Speaker ADuring that time, he had other sons and daughters.
Speaker ASo Adam lived a total of 930 years.
Speaker AThen he died.
Speaker AWhen Seth was 105 years old, Adam, he had a son named Enosh.
Speaker AAfter Enosh was born, Seth lived 807 years.
Speaker ADuring that time, he had other sons and daughters.
Speaker ASo Seth lived a total of 912 years.
Speaker AThen he died.
Speaker AWhen Enosh was 90 years old, he had a son named Kenan.
Speaker AAfter Kenan was born, Enosh lived 815 years.
Speaker ADuring that time, he had other sons and daughters.
Speaker ASo Enosh lived a total of 905 years.
Speaker AThen he died.
Speaker AWhen Kenan was 70 years old, he had a son named Mahalalel.
Speaker AAfter Mahalalel was born, Keinan lived 840 years.
Speaker ADuring that time, he had other sons and daughters.
Speaker ASo Keinan lived a total of 910 years.
Speaker AThen he died.
Speaker AWhen Mahalalel was 65 years old, he had a son named Jared.
Speaker AAfter Jared was born, Mahalalel lived 830 years.
Speaker ADuring that time, he had other sons and daughters.
Speaker ASo Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years.
Speaker AThen he died.
Speaker AWhen Jared was 162 years old, he had a son named Enoch.
Speaker AAfter Enoch was born, Jared lived 800 years.
Speaker ADuring that time, he had other sons and daughters.
Speaker ASo Jared lived a total of 962 years.
Speaker AThen he died.
Speaker AWhen Enoch was 65 years old, he had a son named Methuselah.
Speaker AAfter Methuselah was born, Enoch walked with God 300 years more.
Speaker ADuring that time, he had other sons and daughters.
Speaker ASo Enoch lived a total of 365 years.
Speaker AEnoch walked with God.
Speaker AOne day, Enoch could not be found because God took him.
Speaker AHang on.
Speaker AWait just a second.
Speaker AWhere's the bit about him dying?
Speaker AIt's not there.
Speaker AIt just says one day, Enoch could not be found because God took him.
Speaker AWhich means Enoch didn't die.
Speaker AGod took him straight to heaven.
Speaker AFar out Brussels sprout.
Speaker AImagine someone never dying.
Speaker AAnd did you hear the other really important thing we learn about Enoch?
Speaker AWe're told that Enoch walked With God.
Speaker AI don't think that just means they went for a lovely afternoon stroll together.
Speaker AIt means that Enoch lived for God.
Speaker AHe loved and obeyed and glorified God.
Speaker AHe trusted God.
Speaker AIt doesn't mean he was perfect, but he even trusted God to deal with his sin.
Speaker AHe's in the seventh generation, just like evil Lamech.
Speaker ABut how different is he to Lamech?
Speaker ALamech and Enoch show us two different ways to live.
Speaker AOne with God and one against God.
Speaker ATo live with God brings joy and life.
Speaker ATo go against God leads to more and more evil.
Speaker AThat doesn't mean if you trust God, you'll never die at all.
Speaker ALike Enoch, I think God was showing us that if you stick with him, he'll help you beat death, which he does through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Speaker AThat's why Jesus said in John 11:25 these words, he says, I am the resurrection and the life.
Speaker AHe who believes in me will have life even if he dies.
Speaker AAnd in another place, in John's Gospel, we're told the two ways to live really clearly.
Speaker AIn John 3.
Speaker A36, we're told, he who believes in the Son, that's Jesus.
Speaker AHe who believes in the Son has eternal life.
Speaker ABut he who does not obey the Son will never have that life.
Speaker AGod's anger stays with him.
Speaker AI hope you choose the best way to live, the only way to have life forever, by trusting Jesus.
Speaker ABut you know it's not just you who needs to choose that way.
Speaker AIt's everyone else as well.
Speaker AIs there someone you know who's living the way that leads away from God, away from Jesus?
Speaker APerhaps you could tell them about the much better way, the way that leads to life forever with God.
Speaker ABack in Genesis, the family that chose the right way keeps growing until a very special child is born.
Speaker AHis father says about him, this boy will comfort us from the pain of our work.
Speaker AThe pain is because God has cursed the ground.
Speaker AThe name of the boy who will bring comfort is Noah.
Speaker ABut that's a story for next time.
Speaker AThanks everyone for listening.
